Jerome – Too Stubborn to Die – How the town survived numerous “near-death” experiences.
This presentation covers the fascinating rise and fall of Jerome, Arizona from a major mining center and tourist attraction to a living ghost town. Fires, landslides, floods, labor strikes, polluted air, epidemics, depression, recessions, and financial collapses, might spell the end of a lesser community, but in Arizona one town survived these “near-death” experiences. This presentation looks at the numerous disasters, tragedies, and setbacks the city of Jerome faced in its first ¾ century and still came out on top. From the time the Sinagua’s mined copper for decoration and ornamentation, to the Spanish exploration for gold and silver, to the modern discovery of copper riches within Cleopatra Hill, Jerome exploded to become the fourth largest city in Arizona. Less than half a century later, its population has dwindled to 243. The presentation includes many seldom seen images.
