Get engineering with VEX Robotics! Working in teams, kids ages 8-13 plan, record, and solve practical problems using robots. **Please read long description for full details.**
Robotics uses VEX IQ Generation 2 robot kits to learn the basics of robot design and problem solving. Participants will be divided into teams and work together to build and modify a VEX IQ robot to complete a given challenge (using various VEX IQ challenge sets). Participants will be expected to keep “engineering” notebooks detailing progress they make in both design choices and construction of their robot with each member of the team taking turns acting as the “recorder” for the notebook. The focus of the program is in learning and understanding the engineering design process, particularly iterative design, through hands-on problem solving. All participants must have basic reading and writing skills (2nd/3rd grade level) as well as basic math skills (addition/subtraction).
It is important that participants plan to remain in the course for the entire period from August through April (with no classes during December). The projected schedule includes: learning about the challenge and designing options through September (6-7 weeks); building/re-designing the robot into March (approx. 16 weeks); practicing/skirmishing using the R/C controller into late April (approx. 4 weeks); last session is a “showcase” with the robots open to parents to attend.
*** Please note that the registration wait list will only be utilized in the event of cancellations during the first four weeks of the program OR if registrants no-show (3) times in the first four week period. Due to the incremental nature of the program, there will be no additions into the course after September 30th. In addition, participants who miss (3) consecutive sessions without notice may be removed from the program. ***
***Due to the popularity of this program and material limitations, the age limit, attendance, and participant number limits will be strictly enforced.***

The Maricopa Library and Cultural Center was first conceived back in 1955, when local citizens discovered Library Extension had books to loan. Volunteer-led for nearly 5 decades, MLCC matured along with the city of Maricopa, opening a state of the art building in 2021. Offerings include material check outs, computer usage, passport services, print/copy services, reference, and programs galore led by a hardworking team of dedicated library professionals. There’s even a USPS-contracted postal unit within the library, making it an easy way to complete life’s errands. Fulfilling a critical need for gathering spaces within the city, nearly half of the MLCC is carved out for meeting rooms for community groups, clubs, and quiet study. There is something for every member of the family at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center!
