Kwanzaa was developed in 1966 to unite the far-flung African American community, free from the excesses of typical holiday celebrations. Check out this unique American holiday!
Maricopa Library & Cultural Center is proud to host Citizens Serving Our Community's Kwanzaa Celebration on December 30, 2021. This family-friendly evening will include dancing, singing, a history lesson on this 55 year old holiday, plus chances to be drawn for beautiful Kwanzaa goodie baskets. Come explore the differences and the similarities to other seasonal holidays, and learn what's at the heart of each of Kwanzaa's "Nguzo Saba" or Seven Principles. By the end of the night, you will know exactly how to answer "Habari gani?", how many ears of corn you should have on your mkeka, and be able to say "Kujichagulia" like a native Swahili speaker. Join us!
The Maricopa Library and Cultural Center was first conceived back in 1955, when local citizens discovered Library Extension had books to loan. Volunteer-led for nearly 5 decades, MLCC matured along with the city of Maricopa, opening a state of the art building in 2021. Offerings include material check outs, computer usage, passport services, print/copy services, reference, and programs galore led by a hardworking team of dedicated library professionals. There’s even a USPS-contracted postal unit within the library, making it an easy way to complete life’s errands. Fulfilling a critical need for gathering spaces within the city, nearly half of the MLCC is carved out for meeting rooms for community groups, clubs, and quiet study. There is something for every member of the family at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center!
